New Housing for a Rapidly Growing Harrisburg

The fact is, safety remains a priority for Harrisburg’s growth and the developer. This development is designed with well-lit streets, safe walkways, traffic calming measures and multiple (6) entrances/exits. This planning is the direct result of close collaboration between developers, Adventure Elementary School, and city officials, ensuring the well-being of all residents, especially our children.

Say YES to Smart Intentional Growth for Harrisburg

Harrisburg is South Dakota's fastest growing city. Population projections indicate that the town's growth shows no signs of slowing, which has area developers preparing for a major influx of new residents.

The completion of Veteran's Parkway over the next 5-10 years will bring even more people to northern Harrisburg at an even faster pace. In the next 20 years, our city's population will grow from 9,500 to nearly 30,000; requiring significant new housing & development. It's become quite clear that the time to address this situation is now.

Though new housing is a critical need for Harrisburg, the planned Birdie View development east of Louise Avenue is being opposed by a few golf-course homeowners who don't even live in Harrisburg. This group has gathered 300 signatures from actual Harrisburg residents to put the Birdie View zoning ordinance to a vote and prevent the development from being built. While the  group claims their actions are about traffic congestion and safety, the fact is they don't want this development and the young professionals & families who'll reside there anywhere near their multimillion dollar homes.

It's the classic "not in my backyard" scenario. And it disregards what's critically important for the city of Harrisburg. Let's not let a few wealthy outsiders dictate what Harrisburg needs.

Vote YES on the Rezoning Ordinance.

About the Birdie View Housing Development

Birdie View Street Intersection View

The Birdie View housing development will meet the needs of today's residents and the thousands of newcomers who will soon be living here.

Located along the east side of Louise Avenue, south of Adventure Elementary School, Birdie View will feature single family homes as well as multi-family housing. It's been designed for young professionals, college grads, nursing students, teachers and families drawn to our rapidly growing community. It also features walkable access to Adventure for school-aged children. The plans for Birdie View were thoroughly reviewed and approved by both the local zoning commission and the Superintendent of Harrisburg Schools.

"Birdie View is going to be a great addition to northern Harrisburg," says Harrisburg Mayor Derick Wenck. "With its close proximity to the elementary school, it's going to be a natural destination for growing families; and a great location for young people looking to start their careers here."

The landscaping along Louise Avenue will be an important part of the development, with berms and trees that separate the road from the neighborhood. It will create a safe, natural barrier that will reduces traffic noise and be visually pleasing to anyone driving down Louise, or living near Birdie View.

Mayor Wenck says new developments like Birdie View do more than provide homes for residents to live. "Every new home built contributes $3500 to $5500 in sales tax for the city of Harrisburg.  Multi-family housing contributes even more.  The Birdie View Development on Louise Avenue is a win-win for our city's residents."

I Support Smart Incremental Growth for Harrisburg

I'm Saying YES to the Birdie View Ordinance

Reversing Birdie View's zoning ordinance will negatively affect housing development at a time when we need to prepare for future growth. People living outside Harrisburg should not dictate the actions of our town. Help support the creation of new housing and the decisions of Harrisburg's leadership.
